The Malaysia Society of Haematology held their Scientific Meeting a couple of weekends back in Ipoh at Kinta Riverside Hotel. It was tradition that the meetings were held in alternate year in KL, with Johor Bharu hosting a couple of years back.

The meeting in Ipoh went smoothly with a great list of speakers giving their lectures. I was only involved in advisory role and was not too occupied with the running of the event. I got to actually sit down and listened to the talks. And the turn-out was also a lot more than we expected at the outset. Close to 500 delegates attended with more trying to join at the last minute.

As always, we had few parallel sessions with separate talks for the Pathologists and Nurses. The hotel was relatively small and we struggled to fit all the event elements on the same floor. Therefore, we had the posters displayed at one end of the main hall while the parallel sessions were held on a different floor. The Pharmaceutical booths were also located at a cramped corridor but in the end it serves its purpose.

Holding meetings outside of KL had always been a challenge. Combination of small venues and logistical shortcomings present its own set of issues. On the whole, the meeting went smoothly and I learned plenty from the me tires on offer. Well done to Dr Lim Teik Choon and Dr Teh Hiok Seng for making it happen.
