For Sunday, as Anita was meeting a couple of her college friends at the hotel, I decided to take my Mum for a drive back to Kepala Batas, the place where I was born. We took the scenic route from Butterworth, passing by the landmarks I used to remember from my childhood.

We stopped to visit my Mum’s cousin there - he had been ill for some time - before venturing into my old kampung. This was topped off by lunch at a restaurant I used to frequent as a boy.

A lot has changed in Kepala Batas. Our old ancestry home has been left unkept - it was passed on to my Aunt. Unfortunately renovating the house was slightly tricky with her living in Sungai Petani. The neighbours had also left their plot of land, and most of the homes nearby had turned derelict.

For the drive back, we took the seaside highway, then cross the bridge again into Penang. All was done before 1 pm. An efficient Sunday morning ...
