Expecting More Cases
With the mandates lifted one by one, the number of COVID-19 cases would surely go up, although the majority would be of the lower categories. But Malaysian being Malaysian, once they found out that they tested positive, they would flock to see a Doctor. If possible, they would instead be admitted into the hospital, mainly for assurance.
Now MAEP - which was the main quarantine centre - is closed, the burden on the hospitals would be more significant, be it private or public. In the last week following Chinese New Year, we see an increased number of enquiries for admission among patients who tested positive for COVID. On the other hand, we had to delay chemotherapy for several cases who had close contact with others with the infection, forcing them to be self-isolated.
At least they were honest enough to come forward to mention that they had contact. Should they come without telling us, there is a risk of other patients in Day Care who would be immunocompromised with chemotherapy contracting it as well. We end up with a staff shortage and possibly closure of Day Care, which would cause more disruptions.
In the coming weeks, I am expecting more cases. Now, managing the public expectation and reassuring them would be a challenge for the Ministry. Another lockdown is not possible. Worldwide, the borders are being opened. We would be accepting foreign patients again very soon, and with more people entering from abroad, the risk of another spike of cases would go up.
It is then vitally important for us to keep following the SOP and get at least the first two vaccine injections. It is an excellent controlling measure and ensures that should one contract the infection, it would be milder.
