Under the Weather
I woke up last Friday morning with a terrible body ache and diarrhoea. So, I decided to get some blood tests done before my morning rounds and was surprised to learn that my temperature was 40C and my heart was racing fast. I was quickly put on an IV, and blood work was done.
My ID colleague came round later and put me on an antibiotics drip and advised me to stay overnight in the ward. And of course, I was not having any of that.
As an alternative, I was given antibiotics tablets and instructions to rest at home. That was what I did after sorting out my morning clinic.
When I arrived home, I slept like a baby the moment my head touched the pillow. I woke up a few hours later to hit the toilet - my tummy had yet to settle - and go back to sleep. Altogether, I must have slept at least 12 hours.
The Saturday morning came along, felt a bit refreshed. Then I went to the hospital for some repeat blood work - and again to return on Sunday for a repeat dengue test. As I was about to leave, I got a phone call from the clinic that a patient turned up. She did not get the call that the clinic was cancelled. I only remember singing her prescriptions and not much else. I was still spaced out.
The Saturday evening was a tiring one. It turned out that the antibiotics tablet did not agree with me. I woke up a few times sweating, having had vivid dreams. Apparently, it was one of the side effects. And I was on a higher dose of the medication. I was hydrated by Sunday afternoon. The repeat dengue blood work came back negative. Anita and I took a stroll around our apartment to a nearby cafe. Some coffee would be excellent.
I was back to work as I wrote this, and my clinic would start in half an hour. This morning had been terrible. I was fatigued and just could not get comfortable. I was lucky that there were no procedures arranged for today. I would get the clinic sorted out and take it easy afterwards.
Idlan turned 18 today and he celebrated with two A-Levels papers. The second one would only finish at 9 pm tonight. So, I would be on duty to pick him up then.
