KLIMS 2018

They had a new venue this time around. The previous few KL International Motor Shows (KLIMS) had taken place over at PWTC. This time around, the venue was swankier - the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). Definitely an upgrade, but the same cannot be said about the motor show.

The venue was great and the turnout as reported in the press had been excellent, one can’t hope but to wish for more. None of the marquee European brands were there as exhibitor. As expected, Proton and Perodua turned up, along with other household Japanese automakers. But they did not bring their “A” game. A few concept cars here and there. And that was about it. MPV from Japan? Latest electric car from BMW? Forget it ...

I was having high hopes after leaving KLIMS 2013 that this exhibition will take off. It seemed like it was much the same. As supporter of local commerce, our role is to support but in the meantime, the organiser has the responsibility to improve over time. Left as it was without further shake-up, the motorshow would continue to carry with it an element of “syok sendiri”.

I will not blame Proton or Perodua because they came with full force. It was the role of the organiser to entice the marquee brands to come in and make this a premier event for South East Asia. A missed opportunity indeed ...
