A Second Outing
After my first attempt to take the new iPhone was rained off a couple of weeks back, I had been planning for a quick stroll since after the weekend in PD. Today, I had the chance and this time around I chose a route I was familiar with.
Although the start of the day was cloudy, the sun peered just as I was finishing my rounds. I drove to Bukit Bintang and parked there, taking the MRT into Masjid Jamek area. Had lunch there and strolled around Dataran Merdeka and Chinatown.
I learned a lot from the camera then ... on the whole, it was excellent. It was perfect for day to day snaps. No issues. Things get a bit tricky in situations which required a wide dynamic range. The in-camera HDR capability could only do so much. It tended to try and salvage the highlights, resulting in the photos appearing underexposed. Then, it would try to salvage the snaps by overexposing the shadows. This was when the grains and artefacts started to show.
You ended with a flat snap, which I was not able to salvage in post. I may be lucky if I pay more attention to manual exposure control during the capture process. Still, I found that to be too tedious. Compared to the Huawei, the artefacts appeared more pleasing.
When it comes to indoors snaps, or situation with narrow dynamic range, the camera just shines. The tones were pleasing, and the skin tone was almost always accurate. There was no shutter lag. Looking at the screen, you could see that the camera goes through the algorithm when selecting white balance. Therefore, it was always a good idea to leave the scene on the camera for a few seconds before hitting the shutter. The white balance tended to be more accurate as we wait.
At lower ISO, there were hardly any grains seen. The black-and-white converts appeared contrasty. I mainly ignored the portrait mode, the fake bokeh only appeared fake ...
The camera was definitely an upgrade to the last iPhone that I had. The ultra-wide was definitely a game-changer, but I used it sparingly after a while, especially in low lights. Getting hold of the Pixel in Malaysia is not easy, so, I can’t really compare the two phones side-by-side. I find the tone on the iPhone to better than my Note or the P30 Pro.
