Pictures of Life at GMBB

It was a new venue, hosting a new exhibition. I learned about it from Azul and on reading further, the exhibitors would be holding short sessions talking about their work and motivations. So, why not.

The exhibition is called “Pictures of Life”, held at the brand new GMBB Mall, along Jalan Pudu. It was the first time I have been there and my original plan was to take a Grab ride there. Nearer the time, I decided otherwise. I drove there and to my surprise, it had ample indoor parking space.

I went straight to listen to the talk which was held at a hall on the Ground Floor. The program started off with Moon Rohaizan speaking about her project, “Life of a Commuter”. A fluid 20 minutes background talk about her project, which could be summed as Instagram in steroids. Then followed the talk from M Koggelavani on her trips to Rajasthan, India. Veronika Read and Jiet Wong came next.

I could not hang on after that since I had other plans for the afternoon. I took the escalator up to Floor 3A where the exhibits were at. Along the way, I stopped at the small stores lining the corridors of the mall, all small units selling artwork, which I thought was unique. Plenty more to explore but too little time. I would definitely be back to explore the other work later.

On the main exhibits, the photographers laid 10 to 15 of their photos on the walls. Some narratives, some not. It would help if you listened to their talks, but luckily most of the time, they were around entertaining us with our questions.

The events ran from last Saturday (22nd February) until next Sunday (1st March). It would definitely be worth the visit and hopefully in the years to come, it would feature more photographers, with a more curated set of work. A good start and something I hope would be expanded upon in the years to come. A shout out to the current curator Mogan Selvakannu. They certainly had plenty of backers, and hopefully would be here to stay!
