Closing Early
One thing I was not expecting was how early Chinatown closed nowadays. It was a Saturday evening. And everybody seemed to be moving out at 10 pm. Most of the stalls had already packed up. The tourists were hardly there. Even the cheap hotels in the outskirts of Petaling Street seemed to be quiet!
During our walk, we decided to head to REXKL to see if there was anything cooking there. Even the bar was subdued. There was no music, and the stalls by the roadside were empty. It was not the Chinatown I imagined.
Back a decade ago, my friends from the KLickr group had a 24-hour photo project at Central Market and the surrounding area. The plan was to document the movers and shakers around the area round the clock. They stayed up and roam as a group getting great snaps. I don’t think there was much to catch if they were doing it now ... The town appeared dead!
As we made our way to the LRT station at Pasar Seni, the whole street seemed empty. There was nobody at the entrance. I could not believe that it was Saturday Night. Maybe the COVID-19 scare was in the air. But I found that hard to believe. There were more activities at Pintasan Saloma than it was here ... perhaps it was just signs of the time! Or maybe we should try Jalan Alor and Bukit Bintang for shots of nightlife.
