Gamelan at Godown

The Gamelan Putra Warisan group entertaining us that afternoon

KL could do with more projects such as this - and REXKL - where old buildings were given a new life. The Godown used to be a cabaret club many decades back before being left abandoned. It was refurbished with the help of a Malaysian architect based in Singapore into an exhibition and function hall.

The place is divided into two parts - the original warehouse annexe and the newer industrial concrete annexe. The new extension was basically an open-air multilevel exhibition floor, complete with a hidden roof which was filled with plants and greenery.

One Sunday afternoon, when Anita and I were going out with our cameras, looking for an early dinner, we stumbled across the place quite literally. And it turned out that there was a market being held that weekend. The place was photogenic, and we sampled some of the food and drinks on offer. As we were making our way out, there was a show being prepared in the open-air area. A youth group called the Gamelan Putra Warisan was about to start their gamelan show. A pleasant surprise.

View from the upper platform looking down. A nice vantage point.

We walked back towards Dataran Merdeka, where we parked happily. Looking through the website, activities were still scarce at the centre. But I am sure there will be plenty more to come. There was a small car parking area next to the warehouse, but still, it would be best if you used public transport. The Masjid Jamek LRT was only 10 minutes away.

Time to leave the place

It was good to see KL coming back to life after the pandemic. Every weekend there seemed to be plenty of activities around town. Long may that continue.
